What makes it different

Questions

Before you step onto the mat

Is TatamiChess free?

Yes, everything is free during the open beta. Start without an account; a free one keeps your progress on every device.

Do I need a chess.com or Lichess account?

Only to analyze your own games. Enter your username and TatamiChess reads your public games: no password, no access to your account. No games yet? Start with the first lesson on the Italian Game.

What rating is it for?

Any rating. The replies you prepare for come from Lichess games in your rating band, from under 1000 up to 2500. As your rating climbs, the lines follow.

What do I do when my opponent leaves the main line?

That's what the tree is for. At every fork you prepare an answer to the replies players at your rating actually make, most common first. You'll still meet surprises, just much later and much less often.

Should beginners study openings?

A little, yes. You don't need 20 moves of theory. A small repertoire helps: one opening as White and one answer each to 1.e4 and 1.d4, with the plan behind each and the traps people fall into at your level.

How is this different from an opening course?

A course teaches one author's lines, usually the moves strong players choose. TatamiChess starts from your games, prepares you for the replies players at your rating make, keeps lines short where that's enough, and checks that you learned them in a real game.
